After two positive pregnancy test results and confirmation from the OBGYN, it was settled, I was on my way to becoming a mommy. There was excitement, fear of the unknown, mainly labor :-\, and last but not least raging hormones. I was clueless, I know nothing about babies, let alone how to take care of one. So I began a quest for knowledge. I read anything and everything that had to do with pregnancy and new born babies, I skipped information pertaining to labor and delivery; I didn’t want to psyche myself out. During my research I found numerous articles on the benefits of breastfeeding. It was then that I made my decision to breast feed exclusively for 6 months, and up to a year with solids. Below is a list of interesting benefits that I have compiled:
- Nursing enhances bonding between Mom and Baby
- Breast milk changes properties to meet the nutritional needs of baby as they change
- Breastfeeding reduces mothers risk for breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer
- Breast milk has over 300 more vitamins and minerals than formula
- Nursing can provide up to 98% effective contraception
- Nursing burns 300-500 calories per day
- Antibodies in breast milk develop and strengthen baby’s immune system
- Nursing cuts risks in SIDS
- Nursing lowers risk of obesity and allergies
- Breast milk is liquid gold and can help treat or cure so many ailments such as cracked nipples, sore gums, cradle cap, etc
Breastfeeding is not always easy, some are unable to breastfeed, and it can hurt like crazy for some. Initially for me, nursing was painful; I wanted give up on a few occasions. The knowledge I acquired encouraged me to press forward. The pain subsided after about a week and a half. Five months later my baby girl and I are still pressing forward with enjoyment in our nursing journey. I hope the info above was informative and an encouragement for you.
